PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIAN, James Lorini. James, a long-time parishioner here at St. Faustina, entered the Seminary four years ago and continues to work with us very closely to get a flavor of working in a small parish. He will be heading back to the Seminary for his continuing class work. He spent 6 weeks in Honduras learning Spanish so that he can serve in parishes that have multi-lingual communities…and now, he’s back to studying Theology and preparing to become a priest in the Diocese of Orlando. We've asked James to share his experiences, and to keep us up to date on his progress, through a blog, which will be published when he is able to take a break from his intense studies. We will notify you...in the bulletin, on our App and on our Facebook page, when James' next blog is published. Father Dave
Where we are and where we are going
I pray that the Lord has been able to make Himself present in your lives this summer.
I wish to also first begin by thanking George Cuttita and Fr. Dave for the idea and for allowing me the opportunity to communicate with all of you about my journey so far and what the next few years will look like.
So what have I done so far, I have studied two years in Miami, Florida at St. John Vianney College Seminary where I received a Bachelors in Philosophy. Last year, I began my studies at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, SVdP, which is located in Boynton Beach, Florida where I will be pursuing a Masters in Divinity and further understanding and growth of Gods call.
This summer, I participated in a language immersion program in Antigua, Guatemala. I spent six weeks learning Spanish and encountering the culture. It was a great experience which I am very grateful to have participated in. My Spanish got better but I still have a lot of work.
It is hard to believe but I will be officially starting my fourth year of seminary on August 22. My classmates and I will be entering into what is called 2nd Theology at SVdP. In my class there is about 30 to 33 seminarians, the number has been fluctuating a bit, studying for all 7 Dioceses of Florida, Savannah, Atlanta, Richmond, and Tucson. Counting me, my class currently has 4 Orlando seminarians.
So what is coming, we currently have 4 more years till, God willing, we are Ordained to Jesus’ priesthood. This coming summer we will be participating in a program known as a Clinical Pastoral Experience. This program is a chaplaincy program in which we seminarians learn how to minister in a hospital in various circumstances that one will encounter. Due to my large class we will need to apply to programs all over the United States, currently I am planning to apply to Florida Hospital in Orlando. After the program, we have what is called a Pastoral Year, where we are assigned a parish in our respective diocese and live there for a 10 to 11-month period. The parish to which the Bishop will assign me will be decided at some point next year. After my pastoral year, before 3rd Theology, the Diocese will send me to do a 30 day silent Ignatian retreat. I will begin 3rd theology at SVdP in August of 2018. Near the end of 3rd theology my class will be ordained to the transitional deaconate. The summer after 3rd theology, I will serve as a deacon at a parish. Then 4th theology will begin in August of 2019 which we will continue to pursue the degree and serve in a parish near the seminary, the seminary will choose the parish. Once we have finished 4th Theology and have been approved for Ordination by the seminary and the Bishop of our respective Dioceses, we will be Ordinated to the priesthood of Jesus Christ in May of 2020.
This is more or less the next 4 years for my classmates and I. Please keep us in your prayers as we begin this new semester. Thank you again for all your prayers and support I am very blessed to be a part of this parish and to have gotten to know so many throughout the years.
